In the novel “Pride and Prejudice”, setting has played a great role emphasizing main themes. It was also used as a technique to revel the characters. In addition, long detailed description triggered the imagination of readers.

The setting description, in the novel, helped the readers to get to know the characters. For instance, Darcy’s magnificent massive mansion signifies his huge warm hart. It is also a symbol of his big mind. Moreover, it is filled with art works which are an evidence of Darcy’s sensibility and high taste. Being a man who collects beautiful Antiques from around the world shows his appreciation for art. Add to that, the astonishing design of the green neat trees and the colorful lovely flowers . It also helped to develop the plot when Elizabeth saw Darcy’ s mansion. She knew more about him and found being the mistress of his place very tempting.  On the other hand, Lady Catherine De Burg’s enormous empty mansion is an indication of her empty heart.

Moreover, the novel’s magnificent setting empowers main themes. Marvelous mansions and beautiful faces mark one of the main themes in the novel; appearance verses reality. In some cases, the beauty of appearance strongly contradicts the ugliness of reality. Furthermore, the simplicity of the countryside and the artificiality of the ravish mansions marks the differences between classes. In addition, setting is introducing the Luxuries of upper class and the labors of middle class. Another theme; marriage and money has been highly stressed in the novel. Women’s respect for handsome men grows as their fortune does.

Overall, setting played an important role conveying Austen’s ideas. Furthermore, it is one of the elements which make her novels well favored among people and critics.on the contrary of many other writers, Austen’s description was not a filling for the book. Every information some, way or another, builds on the story.
